I’ve been riding and racing for almost 30 years. One of my little goals has been to find a tape/glove combination that works well in the wet. In the dry all tapes work pretty well – it’s when it gets wet that things go south. Inevitably my tape would get a bit slippery and no matter what glove I had, no matter how much grippy stuff the glove had, my hands would slip around on the bars.
I always keep an eye out for tape that seems like it’d work well in the wet, fondling other riders’ bars, grabbing bikes on the floor, and even running a thumb across exposed tape in boxes.
When I went into one shop for tape, I blurted out I wanted something with good grip. The guy there brought me over to a bike with Serfas bar tape. It felt like superglue on my hands. It was great! I bought a few rolls and used one set to redo bars that I’d just wrapped in regular cork type tape.
The tape is amazing. I promptly won the next field sprint (that afternoon – I wrapped the bars at the race). I joked that it’s worth 50 watts in the sprint, just from having a better grip on the bars. It’s unbeatable in the wet, no hint of slippage.
I’d say that it’s slightly less comfortable than the heavily padded tapes, but no more transparent to shock than the Fizik tape that came on my Cannondale. I haven’t ridden it with padded gloves, just with thin protective ones, and they’re good for 2 hours (longest I’ve ridden them so far).
The grip makes the tape incredibly functional. For me it’s a safety thing – I don’t feel like my hands will slip inadvertently. As a bonus they give me insanely good grip when I’m sprinting.
It also stretches nicely during the wrap process, and they give you a LOT of tape – I had about 18 inches left after doing a pretty conservative wrap job on my bars.
I gave away the two extra sets of tape I got that day. I need to replace them and then some.

I have been racing and training full time with this bar tape for the last couple years and let me tell you, it has been the most comfortable bar tapes I have ever used. It works great in the rain, snow, heat, and is resistant to tears. I have put hundreds of hours training and racing on this tape and it and still feels nice and cushy for all my hands pressure points. Additionally, with a little simple green, it is super easy to clean to a shine over and over again. Thank you Serfas for always making such great products!

I love this tape. I really like Lizard Skins DPS tape but it’s pretty fragile when it comes to me and my style of racing for CX (I’ve been known to eat some course tape on occasion). This bar tape is cheaper and just as tacky and seems to hold up better. It isn’t as padded as the lizard skins DSP tape but it still has plenty of vibration damping. I use this on my sscx bike and have lizard skins on my geared bike but will be running this on the geared bike once I do some cable and housing changes as the lizard skins has several tears in the curve area on my bar.
The extra grip also makes this tape good for riding without gloves, for those that like to ride without gloves. There’s still plenty of grip even with sweaty hands.
